People often ask me what is my all time favorite practical joke. Without a doubt, that would be the puff cigarette. I have had more fun with this item than any other. I make it a point to introduce the puff cigarette to people who are curious but have no experience with practical joke products. To me, puff cigarettes epitomize the classic practical joke because it includes the elements of a "fake" item along with play acting to complete an illusion. For those of you unfamiliar with the puff cigarettes, these are very realistic fake cigarettes. The end glows red, there are scorch marks on the sides along with gray ash, but the real kicker is the puff of smoke. When the victim sees that smoke, he is convinced that you have a lit cigarette. And that's when the fun starts. You could carelessly drop the cigarette on the new carpet, or flick it maliciously at the couch. Or puff some smoke out of the cigarette in an elevator or non-smoking environment. If somebody says
something to you, put the cigarette in your pocket or behind your ear. For the ladies, pull the cigarette out of your purse, expel a cloud of smoke, then throw it back into your purse. Practice in front of a mirror with the puff cigarettes before you try it for real. Work on the casual look and for you kids or non-smokers, work on the cough. Explain that on your last trip to Daytona you picked up a couple of bad habits. The illusion of "smoke" from Puff cigarettes is created simply by powder. You blow into the tube to expel a cloud of powder. Tap the filter end on a hard surface every now and then. This loosens up the powder and makes it work better. When the powder eventually runs out, you can refill them. Just pull out the little piece of cotton in the filter end and put in a little pinch of corn starch or baby powder.

The following scheme would have made an excellent practical joke but for one unanticipated twist. This story was told to me by a lady in her 50's who spoke with a heavy Slavic accent. I showed her the puff (fake) cigarette and she said: "No, that one works too good!"
It turns out that the lady had tried the puff cigarette. Her plan was to fool her brother into thinking that a friend had a suit that was fireproof. She talked up the suit to her brother and then, as proof that the suit was fireproof, she put the puff cigarette to her mouth, created a puff of "smoke", and then touched the "lit" end of the cigarette to the sleeve of her friend's suit jacket. Her brother was amazed to see no burn from the cigarette.
"I can't believe it!" he said, and then before anybody could stop him, touched his own lit cigarette to the other sleeve -- burning a hole in the coat!
Moral of story: when setting up a prank with a fake cigarette, always make sure that nobody has a real lit cigarette handy. This same general rule applies to fake knives and especially to fake guns.
